Giampiero Cantoni graduated in economics and business from the CISD at SDA Bocconi University. In 1964 he founded an electromechanical company that builds electric motors, transformers, speed reducers and tools and which became part of a diversified group enterprise.
Not only is he dedicated to entrepreneurial ventures but he also teaches at leading universities in Italy and abroad. He has been a professor at Bocconi University in Milan as well as a senior lecturer at the School of Management. He founded S. Pio V University (Libera Università) in Rome, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1996 to 2005 and is currently a professor of international economics.
In addition to his entrepreneurial and academic commitments, Giampiero Cantoni has also held important public offices. In particular he has served as the Chairman of the Italian Banking Institute, Vice Chairman of Mediocredito Centrale, Vice Chairman of the Italian Banking Association and Chairman of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro group and Efibanca.
The author of books, publications and business editorials, Giampiero Cantoni has served on the management of the Milan Research Consortium and “La Permanente” Society for Fine Arts and Permanent Exhibitions in Milan. Awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1998 and a Gold Medal for Civil Merit from the Municipality of Milan in 1991, he was granted a “Honoris Causa” degree in mathematics from the University of Camerino in 1992.
Giampiero Cantoni is Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the National Federation of the “Cavalieri del Lavoro” and has been a senator of the Republic since May 2001. Since 2009 he has been Chairman of the Fiera Milano Foundation. He is a member of the Scientific Committee for Ernst&Young, the Board of Directors for the Alcide De Gasperi Foundation and the Scientific Committee of Panorama Economy. Giampiero Cantoni is also Chairman of the fourth Permanent Senate Defence Committee.
